About 'university of hawaii in hilo'|FOLLOWUP TO: A LETTER FROM HILO HAWAII TO THE INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY COMMUNITY
In the hours before dawn on Saturday, FEB 27th, a massive 8.8 earthquake hit the country of Chile. With its epicenter just off the coast, it struck about 200 miles southwest of The Chilean capital of Santiago. The epicenter was close enough to the capital that it caused power outages and loss of water and phone services around the city. Some reports have stated that there were or are nearly constant aftershocks. The highest aftershock being a 6.9. Other reports have stated that the aftershocks could be felt at least once every hour. Even though Santiago has received substantial damage, there has been greater damage reported in other areas. One of the hardest hit areas is the city of Concepcion. It has been reported that buildings in the city have had parts of them torn down, while others are left burning. According to one report a 15 story building was reduced to a mere 3 stories. In addition to destroyed buildings, collapsed bridges and damaged hospitals, main roads have been left damaged including major roads that connect the south and north. The main airport in Santiago has also been shut down. All of this has made travel in the region difficult. Parts of Argentina also felt the 8.8 quake. The capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, had some of its buildings evacuated for of safety reasons. With all of this damage, President Michelle Bachelet declared areas of catastrophe allowing for aid to reach hard hit areas quicker. President elect Sebastian Pinera stated that at least 122 people had been killed, with fears that the toll will go higher. Areas across the Pacific could also be affected by the massive quake. A tsunami was generated when the quake hit. Tsunami warnings and advisories have been posted as far away as Russia, Alaska and Australia. Shortly after the quake hit there were 9 foot waves reported in areas of Chile nearest to the epicenter. Now the focus turns to Hawaii as it braces for the tsunami. Shortly after midnight, Hawaiian time, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the state. It is estimated that the possible tsunami will hit sometime after 11 am Hawaiian time. 11 am Hawaiian time translates to 4pm Eastern time. In addition to event cancellations and beach closures, many public places including malls and golf courses were also closed. The long list of cancellations and closures also included university campuses, the Honolulu Zoo and the Hilo airport. The Hilo airport was closed at 6am Hawaiian time. The main focus for officials in Hawaii is the public's safety. Evacuations to higher ground were underway for hours before the forecast arrival time of the Tsunami. While local officials were trying to ensure the safety of Hawaii's citizens and visitors, the Coast Guard was in the process of evacuating Hawaiian ports, so that supplies could more easily enter once the tsunami is over. The Coast Guard had been in contact with larger vessels, including a cruise liner, keeping them abreast of the situation. This writers thoughts and prayers are with everyone effected by this evolving disaster. Special thanks to: Reuters & Alonso Soto. FoxNews.com & Ali Reed.
