About 'university of hawaii in hilo'|FOLLOWUP TO: A LETTER FROM HILO HAWAII TO THE INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY COMMUNITY








In               the               hours               before               dawn               on               Saturday,               FEB               27th,               a               massive               8.8               earthquake               hit               the               country               of               Chile.

With               its               epicenter               just               off               the               coast,               it               struck               about               200               miles               southwest               of               The               Chilean               capital               of               Santiago.

The               epicenter               was               close               enough               to               the               capital               that               it               caused               power               outages               and               loss               of               water               and               phone               services               around               the               city.

Some               reports               have               stated               that               there               were               or               are               nearly               constant               aftershocks.

The               highest               aftershock               being               a               6.9.

Other               reports               have               stated               that               the               aftershocks               could               be               felt               at               least               once               every               hour.
               Even               though               Santiago               has               received               substantial               damage,               there               has               been               greater               damage               reported               in               other               areas.

One               of               the               hardest               hit               areas               is               the               city               of               Concepcion.

It               has               been               reported               that               buildings               in               the               city               have               had               parts               of               them               torn               down,               while               others               are               left               burning.

According               to               one               report               a               15               story               building               was               reduced               to               a               mere               3               stories.
               In               addition               to               destroyed               buildings,               collapsed               bridges               and               damaged               hospitals,               main               roads               have               been               left               damaged               including               major               roads               that               connect               the               south               and               north.

The               main               airport               in               Santiago               has               also               been               shut               down.

All               of               this               has               made               travel               in               the               region               difficult.
               Parts               of               Argentina               also               felt               the               8.8               quake.

The               capital               of               Argentina,               Buenos               Aires,               had               some               of               its               buildings               evacuated               for               of               safety               reasons.
               With               all               of               this               damage,               President               Michelle               Bachelet               declared               areas               of               catastrophe               allowing               for               aid               to               reach               hard               hit               areas               quicker.

President               elect               Sebastian               Pinera               stated               that               at               least               122               people               had               been               killed,               with               fears               that               the               toll               will               go               higher.
               Areas               across               the               Pacific               could               also               be               affected               by               the               massive               quake.

A               tsunami               was               generated               when               the               quake               hit.

Tsunami               warnings               and               advisories               have               been               posted               as               far               away               as               Russia,               Alaska               and               Australia.
               Shortly               after               the               quake               hit               there               were               9               foot               waves               reported               in               areas               of               Chile               nearest               to               the               epicenter.

Now               the               focus               turns               to               Hawaii               as               it               braces               for               the               tsunami.

Shortly               after               midnight,               Hawaiian               time,               The               Pacific               Tsunami               Warning               Center               issued               a               tsunami               warning               for               the               state.

It               is               estimated               that               the               possible               tsunami               will               hit               sometime               after               11               am               Hawaiian               time.

11               am               Hawaiian               time               translates               to               4pm               Eastern               time.
               In               addition               to               event               cancellations               and               beach               closures,               many               public               places               including               malls               and               golf               courses               were               also               closed.

The               long               list               of               cancellations               and               closures               also               included               university               campuses,               the               Honolulu               Zoo               and               the               Hilo               airport.

The               Hilo               airport               was               closed               at               6am               Hawaiian               time.
               The               main               focus               for               officials               in               Hawaii               is               the               public's               safety.

Evacuations               to               higher               ground               were               underway               for               hours               before               the               forecast               arrival               time               of               the               Tsunami.
               While               local               officials               were               trying               to               ensure               the               safety               of               Hawaii's               citizens               and               visitors,               the               Coast               Guard               was               in               the               process               of               evacuating               Hawaiian               ports,               so               that               supplies               could               more               easily               enter               once               the               tsunami               is               over.
               The               Coast               Guard               had               been               in               contact               with               larger               vessels,               including               a               cruise               liner,               keeping               them               abreast               of               the               situation.
